Prague based artist Jan Mikulka, from the Czech Republic, has been awarded £20,000 for winning The Royal Society of Portrait Painters new Self Prize.

The new award attracted 946 entries by 635 artists, with Mikulka’s work, entitled Self Portrait coming in on top. In 2011 Mikulka also won the visitor prize in the National Portrait Gallery’s BP Portrait Award for his photorealistic portrait of his lifelong friend, Jakub, a section of which can be seen above.

Self Portrait (seen below) is on display at the Royal Society’s annual exhibition at London’s Mall Galleries until 24th May.
